Peri-Implantitis Masterclass: Diagnosis, Challenges & Management

In conjunction with   and Professor Axel Spahr
Sponsored by EMS

Venue: International Convention Centre, 14 Darling Drive, Sydney
Timings: 7.30am arrival for 8.00am start – 5:00pm finish (Full Day)
Presenter: Professor Axel Spahr

Overview/Synopsis:
This full day hands-on masterclass will focus on the critical issues related to managing patients with peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis and provides training on various surgical modalities of peri-implantits for optimal treatment outcomes.

This workshop will present the different non-surgical and surgical treatment alternatives and critically evaluate their efficacy. This will include the use of regenerative techniques in combination with different types of bone grafts. Furthermore, risk assessment tools for the development of an appropriate and customised maintenance/recall programme of patients receiving dental implants will also be discussed.

Learning objectives:

  • Key preventative measures regarding the supra structure to maximise longevity of dental implants and minimise risks for peri-implant disease
  • “Hopeless” vs “Questionable” implants – decision-making criteria
  • In which clinical situations is a regenerative approach the preferred treatment option for peri-implantitis including the use of bone graft?
  • Which clinical situation would benefit from the use of a membrane?
  • In which clinical situations is a respective approach the preferred treatment option for peri-implantitis?
  • What benefits and potential risks may be associated with an implantoplasty procedure?
  • How do we maintain peri-implant health after treatment for long term success?

All preventive measures should be undertaken to prevent peri-implant complications. Individualised treatment planning, surgical treatment as well as a regular maintenance program are crucial for dental implant success.

Implant-retained Mandibular Overdenture Hands on Workshop

Aimed at General practitioners with basic level implant training and experience

Venue: International Convention Centre, 14 Darling Drive, Sydney
Timings: 8.30am arrival for 9.00am start – 11.00am finish (Morning)
Presenters: Associate Professor Richard W Chan OAM University of Sydney, University of Hong Kong and Dr Michael Chang, Prosthodontist

Overview/Synopsis:
With the steady increase in the ageing population worldwide, the impact of inadequate masticatory function on the overall health of this vulnerable group is often overlooked. There’s an apparent over emphasis in the dental profession on fixed implant-supported restorations. While most edentulous patients cope reasonably well with maxillary complete dentures, they often struggle badly with their mandibular complete dentures.
Implant-retained mandibular overdentures have been advocated as the “standard of care” for the edentulous mandible for the following reasons:

  • Relatively simple procedure with relatively little surgical risks
  • Falls comfortably within the skill set of appropriately trained general dentists
  • Imparts major improvement in oral function/quality of life for the edentulous patient
  • Relatively low cost compared to alternative fixed prosthodontic options
  • High implant survival rate and high prosthetic success rate and patient satisfaction
  • More simple oral hygiene/maintenance protocol than fixed implant restorations especially for elderly patients with reduced manual dexterity

Learning objectives:
On completion of this workshop participants should be familiar with:

  • Treatment options for the edentulous mandible
  • Possible surgical complications associated with placing implants in the anterior mandible
  • Different types of implant attachments for an implant-retained overdenture
  • Factors to consider when treatment planning for an implant-retained overdenture
  • Clinical treatment sequence for an implant retained overdenture
  • How to duplicate a denture, how to attach an impression coping to an implant/ abutment and take an impression.
  • Possible complications associated with implant-retained overdentures

Agenda:

8.30am 9.00am Registration
9.00am 11.00am Lecture and hands-on

(Subject to change)

Cost: AUD$275 (GST inclusive)
Maximum participants: 20

Exodontia Workshop

Venue: Dentsply Sirona 19/39 Herbert St, St Leonards NSW
Timings: 8.00am arrival for 8.30am start – 4.30pm finish (Full Day)
Presenter: Dr Mark Daniel Atkinson, Oral Surgeon

Overview/Synopsis:
This program is an interactive one-day course suitable for dental practitioners of all experience levels wanting to improve their confidence and skills in surgical exodontia.

The primary aim of this course is to develop the skills of general dental practitioners in applying an appropriate surgical plan in their exodontia cases to ensure predictable outcomes in daily practice. Common exodontia complications will be presented along with appropriate management plans.

The day will include didactic lectures and hands-on training on 3D printed oral surgery models designed from actual patient CBCT and intra-oral digital scan data. The models provide a realistic feeling of detachment of the periodontal ligaments, movement of teeth and density of bone during surgical exodontia training.
